How Long Does Car Detailing Actually Take?
Real time estimates per service for sedans, SUVs, and trucks. Why express tunnels can't do in 20 minutes what a proper detail takes 4-8 hours to do.
Real car detailing takes hours. Not minutes. The reason an express tunnel can run you through in 20 minutes is that the work an express tunnel does is not the same work a detail does. A real detail decontaminates, polishes, and protects every surface, and every step has to happen in order or it doesn't hold. Here's the actual time budget for each service.
Full exterior detail
Sedan: 3 to 4 hours. SUV or truck: 4 to 5 hours.
Time breakdown: pre-rinse and foam soak (20 minutes), two-bucket hand wash (45 minutes), iron decontamination and clay bar (45 minutes to 1 hour), dry and inspect (20 minutes), single-stage polish to remove light swirls (45 minutes to 1.5 hours), sealant or wax application (30 minutes), tires, wheel wells, and trim (45 minutes).
Most of that time is decontamination and polish. Skip those and you have a fast wash, not a detail.
Full interior detail
Sedan: 3 to 4 hours. SUV or truck: 4 to 6 hours.
Time breakdown: full vacuum including under seats and trunk (30-45 minutes), hot-water extraction on carpets and upholstery (1-2 hours), leather clean and condition (30 minutes), hard-surface wipedown (30-45 minutes), glass and headliner (20 minutes), dressing and final wipe (20 minutes).
Pet hair, kid messes, or set-in stains add 30 to 90 minutes.
Paint correction (multi-stage)
Stage 1 (light): 4 to 6 hours. One pass with polish to clear up minor swirl marks and water spots.
Stage 2 (medium): 6 to 10 hours. Two passes, cutting compound followed by polish. Removes deeper swirls, light scratches.
Stage 3 (heavy): 8 to 16 hours, often spread over two days. Heavy cutting compound, refining polish, finishing polish. Removes oxidation, deeper scratches, restores depth to dull paint.
Ceramic coating
1 to 2 days total when you include the prep that has to happen first.
Day 1: paint correction at whatever stage the car needs (paint that goes under ceramic has to be at its best, otherwise you're locking in the swirls). Day 2: panel-by-panel ceramic application with cure time between panels. Final inspection.
The coating itself isn't fast - each panel has to be wiped clean, coated in a precise pattern, then leveled within a narrow time window before the next panel.
Why an express tunnel can't do this
Tunnels run cars through in 5-15 minutes because they only do one thing - rinse and rub. The brushes don't decontaminate. No clay bar, no iron remover, no polish, no protectant beyond a basic spray sealant. They can't extract carpets, condition leather, or correct paint.
A tunnel wash before a road trip is fine. A tunnel wash is not detailing.
Common questions
Q.01Why does a detail take so long?+
Because the work itself takes that long. Decontamination, polish, and protection each take time, and they have to happen in order. Skipping or rushing any step shows in the finish a week later.
Q.02Can you do it in an hour?+
Not a real detail. A maintenance wash, sure - that's 60 to 90 minutes. A maintenance wash is something we offer to clients on our maintenance plans between full details.
Q.03Do I need to be home the whole time?+
No. We need the car accessible and a water hookup. Most clients hand off keys, leave us to work, and check back at the end.
